In 1992, two cousins, Damien and Nicholas, set off from Los Angeles on a surf and culinary adventure. Making their way south, they stumbled upon a diamond-in-the-rough called Sayulita. With one phone line in town at the Paleteria and hardly any other services, Sayulita was a dusty fishing village that time seemed to have forgotten. Tucked into a jungle-clad bay with a consistent rivermouth break, Sayulita’s serene natural beauty and the warm hospitality of the locals impressed the two travelers. So much that they decided to stay. And thus a dream began to crystallize – to build a world-class restaurant on the beach of this little paradise. Like many passionate dreamers, they were laughed at, told it would never work. But true to the old adage “if you build it, they will come”, they did… and the people came. Over 22 years later, they keep coming back.
Giving BackFrom the onset of their experience in Sayulita, Damien and Nicholas have always believed in improving the quality of life for the locals who call this place home. They financed the restoration of the malecon and fortification of the beach area. They have repeatedly contributed to the development of the growing town’s sewer system and financed upgrades to the local power grid. Most importantly, Don Pedro’s has employed at least one member of every founding family of the village. Don Pedro’s continues to be the largest employer in Sayulita.

Our tequila is our pride and joy. We serve our Blanco (rested in steel for two months), our reposado (aged in re-charred barrels for 7 months) and our Añejo (aged for 2 years). We use 100% Blue Agave and the sacred healing waters of the springs of Atotonilco. Our tequila process is "intentionally inefficient" roasting our piñas for three times the amount of time as the industry standard and crushing everything slowly under a traditional Tahona stone. Sayulita Turtle Camp

As environmental awareness grows in Sayulita, so does the wildlife. Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita is a voluntary community project. The goal of this Sayulita organization is to relocate the sea turtle nests, as well as educate locals and visitors how to protect them from poaching. A huge effort has been put into effect for programs to educate young, local children about the importance of sea turtle preservation and environmental compassion. Sayulita is along the Nayarit Coast and is home to the Olive Ridley sea turtles. Recently in the winter of 2016, residents of Sayulita were excited to see a very rare nest of Leatherback turtles emerge from their nests. Locals and vistors enoy the sunset releasing of the hatchlings where many volunteers, families, and children help. Educating and protecting the beach helps the little baby turtles get a chance at life and has become an important goal within the Sayulita community.
The beaches of Sayulita are the perfect location for large numbers of sea turtles to nest. Although sea turtles live most of their lives at sea, the females return to land and lay their eggs. Female turtles always return to the precise location where they themselves were born to lay their own eggs. Because of this, it is extremely crucial to preserve the turtles natural habitat and preserve their species from poaching. After incubating for about two months in the beaches of Sayulita, the two-inch long turtles hatch, erupt as a group from their nest in the cool of the night, and scurry down the beach to the sea.
Volunteers
For the past eight years, locals and volunteers have come to Sayulita with the dedication to help preserve the native sea turtles and their legacy. Sayulita has been blessed with the amout of volunteers, night patrols, official uniforms, and interns as more awareness of the local program has increased. The creators of Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita emphasize their wish to keep the local Sayulita beach front clean and are trying to provide an example to others about volunteerism and give back to nature. The main season when volunteers are needed most are from the months of June to February. Sayulita's Campamento Tortuguero is now part of a civil association known as Red Tortuguera A.C. that has similar turtle camps in different areas of Nayarit. This Sayulita association has not been provided any funds, so the turtle camp is entirely dependent on volunteers time and donations from locals and tourists.
Adopt a Turtle Nest
Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita welcomes all local residents and those visiting Sayulita to adopt a turtle nest. Turtle nests are available for adoption for $500 pesos and you will have the opportunity to release the baby turtles when your nest hatches. Be sure to check the Campamento Tortugueo Sayulita Facebook page, as they update frequently on adoption nests. By adopting a turtle nest, funds go directly to the camp for use of materials, flashlights, wood for the incubation area, marking points, markers, and more.
When to Visit
The turtle camp is on Sayulita's north playa just beside the Las Hamacas Compound and before Hotel CasaBlanca. It is a roped off area on the beach with marker sticks indicating each nest. Turtle Camp is open year round. To get there, walk past three compounds from the trailer park and Terrazola restaurant. Volunteers are needed to help relocate nests from the months of June and July. Be sure to check the North side of the beach every night around 6:30pm for the turtle release. Enjoy the sunset and help release the baby turtles that hatched that day! For those visiting during the end of the season, there is a year-round, river turtle rescue sancturary located on the inside of the fence at the property. Visitors are encouraged and welcomed to come and see the turtles all year round. Please check in at the bar before entering.

We had the guacamole, infused with tomato, onions and garlic, one of the very best ever.
The mussels and garlic shrimp were outstanding. The mussels were perfectly roasted & adorned with aged balsamic and mango and onion.
The shrimp were perfectly cooked with fresh roasted garlic and potatoes and a lovely spring mix salad with ginger dressing.
The fresh baked bread with cilantro, lime cream sauce was a true delight.

Since 2009, the Mercado del Pueblo, Sayulita's Farmer's Market, celebrates wonders of the region by featuring local farmers and families who produce high quality, natural, consumable products. Shoppers from Manzanillo to Chicago to Canada rave that this market is one of best natural food markets that they've seen anywhere!
El Mercado del Pueblo opened in 2009 joining the Mexican and American Slow Food Movements of bringing local, sustainable products directly to the table for people to enjoy. The purpose of El Mercado is to provide local farmers a venue to bring healthy and sustainable food to the community and for the people of Sayulita to see the seasonal, fresh foods of the region. The vendors at El Mercado are committed to high quality, organic, and natural growing practices and teaching locals and visitor alike about the benefits of healthy eating, often introducing indigenous products to locals that are unfamiliar with them. Othon, one of the vendors in the market, recently opened an organic farm in Litibu with an accompanying restaurant. Othon is passionate about the organic movement saying "My goal is of course to have healthy food for my children but also to teach them to take care of the earth and to treasure it. Organic farming and local selling is part of our Mexican culture and I want my children to understand that." To add to the diversity of the Mercado, various local artists were added to the vendor list in 2012, making the Mercado an even more interesting experience.
While natural food markets are common in other parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada, the Mercado del Pueblo was the first of its kind to open along the coast of Nayarit. Soon afterwards other similar markets have opened including Puerto Vallarta and La Cruz. Yael, the owner of Organic Superfoods, originally from Guadalajara, has been watching the organic movement grow over the past several years. Several years ago, Yael's husband became ill and they began looking for alternative ways to stay healthy. They discovered the power of organics and brought his knowledge with them to the coast opening up an organic food store in Puerto Vallarta. Both Yael and her husband Manuel now participate in all three food markets, give workshops on eating healthy and are often invited to speak at local schools.
The Mercado also features a wonderful venue for cross cultural sharing of food preparations, growing techniques and healing practices. The Mercado, in partnership with the people of Sayulita, begins to build a community of local food knowledge, International cuisine, community gardening and care for the planet. Most shoppers at the market come to taste and shop and end up staying for a few hours as they bump into friends, enjoy the live music or just become engaged in a conversation. Enrique, who has lived in Sayulta for over 30 years states, "This market provides me a way to enjoy good food and friends all in one place, there is a good feeling here."
The Mercado is located on Calle Revolucion north of the bridge, in the empty lot behind the Comex paint store, and runs from November through April, and sometimes into May, mimicking the growing season along the coast. Close to forty vendors attend providing a wide variety of products including naturally grown and organic vegetables and produce, homemade yogurts, sauces, peanut butter, almond butter, baked goods, breads, and body products. Artisan prepared foods are also available in the market such as pickles, soups, quesadillas, savory pies and vegetarian offerings - making it easy to spend most of the day, enjoy lunch and listen to live music. Rancho Mi Chaparrita started its activities more than a decade ago with horse rentals, something they still offer today, but services now include many more activities, such as zip-lines and quad biking, diving, sport fishing, surfing and excursions to the Nearby lonely beaches.
The main attraction is now the canopy tour, which has 13 lines and 3 suspension bridges, the trip itself lasts about one hour and twenty minutes and is very popular with both international and Mexican tourism.
The canopy tour serves groups of about 15 people at a time. You can combine the zip lines with horseback riding and enjoy a complete adventure
They also offer rental of boogie boards and paddleboard rentals. Other options are snorkeling, whale watching and excursions to see the fauna in the Marietas Islands.

Los Delfines in Sayulita consists of seven beautiful beachfront villas for rent, individually or together, in the Los Delfines and Las Gemelas complexes, which sit side by side on the beach in Sayulita Mexico, and the next property is the six villa Las Hamacas complex.
